Seven Virginia elementary school kids consumed gummy bears laced with fentanyl from a bag one of them brought from home and shared with the others. This resulted in two people being taken into custody.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office reported that Clifford Dugan, 50, and Nicole Sanders, 26, were accused of abusing a child and contributing to delinquency after a group of fourth-graders at Central Elementary School required medical care on Tuesday due to something they ate at lunch.

It was discovered throughout the inquiry that these students had consumed gummy bears. Police released a statement stating that the SRO present at the incident noticed residue in the baggie containing the candy.

During lunch, one of the seven kids carried the bag of gummies to school and distributed them to his peers, according to WSLS.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Dallas Hill told CNN that five children were transported to a hospital, including two who were transported by ambulance.

They all experienced symptoms including nausea, vomiting, headache and muscle spasms, he said.

Clifford Dugan, 50, was charged with “delinquency, abuse of a child.”
Nicole Sanders, 26, faces charges of “delinquency, abuse of a child.” and possessing Schedule I or Schedule II narcotics.

Officials stated that a field test kit on the bag revealed a positive result for fentanyl, and the sample will be forwarded to a lab run by the Drug Enforcement Administration for more analysis.

Following the investigation, Dugan and Sanders were brought into jail at a house on Pendleton Drive in Amherst County after police executed a search request there.

Sanders was also charged with possessing Schedule I or Schedule II narcotics, while Dugan is facing a count of having a handgun in his possession after a prior conviction.

The impacted students were discharged from a hospital late on Tuesday, according to William Wells, superintendent of schools.

The school district says that it had “confirmed that the bag was brought from home by a student” in a note to families. While the Sheriff’s Office conducts its inquiry, we will cooperate with them.

Wells stated during the press conference, “This is not a school matter. It was someone’s home where the fentanyl was found. I request that our parents assume responsibility. It is real and it exists here.”

Ten-year-old Hayden claimed in an interview with WSET that the gummy bears “tasted weird.” And then it was tasty. The aftertaste was quite tasty.

Kristina Wright, seen with her son, Hayden, urged parents to be vigilant.

However, after lunch, things became worse.

With his mother’s approval, Hayden spoke with the publication on Facebook and said, “We felt nauseous, sick in our stomachs, hot.”

“I was really scared when I was in the ambulance,” he admitted. “I was shaking so much that they could hardly put my clothes on.”
